Who we are

Wellington Synchronised Swimming is a friendly club run from Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie, Wellington, New Zealand.

Our Club is affiliated with the national organisation: Synchro Swim New Zealand and is a non-profit organisation. The club is managed by a committee of dedicated parents volunteering their time. Our swimmers are spread out across the wider wellington region and their ages range from 8-18 years old.

We are the only Artistic Swimming club in the Wellington region

Our Mission is to create a fun, encouraging and supportive environment for our swimmers to challenge themselves, to develop a sense of sportsmanship and to grow their synchro skills and knowledge.

Our Swimmers

We have two categories of swimmer at Wellington Synchro - Mermaids and Competitive.

Age definition: all athletes age is defined by how old they are in "synchro years" - this is the age the athlete is on the 31st December in the current year - IE if Suzie Starfish is 13 on the 2nd of December in 2024 she will be eligible to swim in the Youth category.  These age group rules apply to most sports.

Mermaids - Are the very first category of swimmer, and are our beginners. The focus for these swimmers is having fun and learning the basic skills, including participation in a basic routine. Training is only on a Sunday, and is seen as a non-competitive, friendly introduction to Synchronised Swimming.

Competitive: Our competitive swimmers attend training three times a week. Our competitive swimmers are split into different categories depending on their age, ability and ambitions.

Less competitive athletes or recent competitive athletes are grouped following Artistic Swimming New Zealand rules into the following categories, which while are still competitive, are generally for swimmers who do not want to (or haven't) reached the skill level to represent New Zealand:

  • Dolphin
  • Aquanaut
  • Aquarina

The most competitive swimmers are grouped following World Aquatics competition rules into the following categories, and are the groups of higher skill level or for those wanting to represent New Zealand.

  • 10 yrs and Under
  • 12 yrs and Under
  • Youth (13-15 yrs)
  • Junior (16 - 19yrs)
  • Senior (19 and above)

Additional training sessions are available to those competitive athletes who wish to take on multiple routines.
